After Netflix has seen success with its reboot of Unsolved Mysteries, the series will be getting a weekly companion podcast in 2021.
The Netflix original Unsolved Mysteries will be getting a companion podcast. Unsolved Mysteries is a revival/reboot of the widely popular documentary series of the same name, which aired on various channels from 1987 to 2010. Each episode mixes documentary-style storytelling with dramatized reenactments about various subjects, focusing on things like unsolved crimes, missing persons, and alleged paranormal phenomenon. The show has a complicated broadcast history, originally airing on NBC before moving on to CBS, Lifetime, and finally Spike TV when it was canceled in 2010. In 2019, it was revealed that Netflix would air a new season of the show.
Now, Deadline is reporting that Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries will be getting a weekly podcast as a companion to the show. The podcast will feature new cases not previously discussed on the show, have a narrator, and feature the original show’s theme music. The podcast will also retain the interviews with those involved with the case and a request of further information from the viewer like the original show. It will release in 2021.
True crime podcasts like the widely popular Serial have become pop-culture sensations. Since the storytelling format within many of those podcasts take a lot from the original Unsolved Mysteries, it’s no wonder that the production team behind the reboot would want to dip their toes in that area. While the revival has been met with a mixed response from fans of the original series, an Unsolved Mysteries podcast could prove to be an interesting direction to take the franchise.
